The downtown Berkeley BART station was temporarily shut down late Monday due to a power outage that affected about 45,000 PG&E customers in the East Bay.
PG&E officials said the outage was due to a squirrel getting into the lines at the El Cerrito power station. About 30,000 of the customers affected by the outage were from Berkeley area, according to PG&E. Power was restored to customers at around 10:45 p.m.
BART reported the station reopened shortly after 10 p.m. PG&E was expected to restore power to East Bay customers by 11 p.m.
PG&E also reported heat-related outages in Gilroy and San Jose, affecting a total of 12,000 customers at its peak. At the peak of the outage, about 5,000 customers were without power, which was reduced to about 75 at 6 a.m. Tuesday, PG&E said. Early Tuesday morning, about 25 customers were still without power in San Jose. PG&E officials said they hoped all power would be restored by 10 a.m. Tuesday.
